I've used, or am using all of the APPS I describe, below. Some are problematic and I'll let you know about that. Others are superb; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is what I'll label this type.
why use an android phone?
GOOGLE created the Android smart phone operating system, and all necessary APPS required for keeping track of your life are easily available, and, MORE IMPORTANTLY, integrate and synchronize easily.
So if I use Google Calendar on my computer to update some activities, those changes automatically synchronize across to my phone, and to my tablet, and update the Google calendar on those.
===============
KEY POINT:
You can make a change to that Google APP on any Android device and that change reflects quickly to all your other Android devices. PLUS many non-Google APPS also automatically sync across your devices.
===============
After some experimenting, I have found a 1/2 dozen or so APPS that facilitate my travelling throughout the world.

other smart phones that may well work oK... i've never tried them.
- Apple iPhones (the original and usualy most innovative)
- Blackberry (falling behind, severely, I fear)
- Windows (former incarnations have been problematic, but this one is doing OK, according to reviewers)
google APPS THAT I USE
aPP #1: gmail
I like this for several reasons:
- works worldwide (email from Telus and Rogers is really flaky outside N. America)
- easy to use on my phone (Google phone, Google email)
- huge storage space (never trash another email if you don't want to)
- simple to use, AS IS
- multiple accounts integration (I have 5 gmail accounts, and they all "show up" on my main account)
- easy customization
- all kinds of add-ons for more power
- Google Calendar links directly
